MAKING PEDs was an international DUT – Driving Urban Transitions project coordinated by the Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC).
Running from November 2023 to May 2026, it researched and tested Digital Twins as a critical tool for addressing complexity and supporting decision-making in cities.
International Expertise
Eleven international partners collaborated to support four cities in their decision-making processes for the regeneration of four districts, each aiming for climate neutrality. MAKING PEDs focused on assessing energy districts and understanding how citizens influence the energy equation. A critical part of this work was developing reliable predictions for business models related to the large-scale energy retrofitting of buildings.
Focus on Decision-Making
The project focused on addressing a critical gap in the decision-making process for large-scale PED development. While several initiatives addressed the factors needed to enable implementation, success depended on getting many of them right from the start. One of the main challenges was managing the complexity of building retrofits, while decision-makers lacked tools to bring all the necessary information together.
Climate impact
A Digital Twin is not an isolated goal. Instead, MAKING PEDs will be using this concept of a living virtual model to foster the creation of Positive Energy Districts – as all its objectives help cities to move towards their climate neutrality goals.
