Workflows for 3D City Model Creation Released for Urban Digital Twins

Organizing, harmonizing, and structuring local urban datasets for climate-neutral district modeling.

The MAKING PEDs project has documented its practical methodology for generating the 3D city models utilized across its localized platforms.

This report presents the concrete workflows used to generate these models from heterogeneous source data. Developed by our consortium partners the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC), and University of Roma Tre, with contributions from Ciclica and the City of Linz, the document serves as a guide for preparing data to support urban energy analysis.

The modeling procedures draw on practical implementation and validation steps executed across our four Urban Living Labs: Bærum (Norway), Civitavecchia (Italy), Linz (Austria), and Sant Esteve de Palautordera (Spain).

The report details how incomplete data were managed, outlines modeling conventions for photovoltaic systems, and explains how vegetation was encoded. These technical steps ensure the 3D models meet the quality assurance requirements necessary to power district-level simulations.
